philips - BUILDING THE VISION

This paper is a result of an applied research project by philips into ambient intelligence in the home. Researchers spend 1 year in a home studying all possibilities to use ambient intelligence. They noted that the biggest challenge for future technology is thus to be not only physically embedded
but also to be interwoven into the social context of the home of the future. Researchers focused upon 3 consumer needs in the study:

1. the need to belong & share experiences
2. the need for thrills excitement & relaxation &
3. the need to balance & organise one’s life.

Communicating daily in i-pot language has become a comforting part of life

His electric kettle, an "i-pot" (for information pot), not only boils water for his instant miso soup and green tea but it also records the times he pushes a button and dispenses the water. A wireless communication device at the bottom of the i-pot sends a signal to a server. Members of the service can see recent records of i-pot usage on a Web site. In addition, twice a day the server e-mails the most recent three usage times to a designated recipient. [more]
